Wohl Rec Center Closes For Renovations
Wohl Recreation Center, 1515 North Kingshighway, temporarily will close Sunday, Nov. 1 so $2.7 million in renovations can be made to the building. It will reopen in early June.
Wohl, operated by the Recreation Division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, was built in 1965 and will see a major rehab of the building structure and all its facilities, including the swimming pool area. The roof was replaced this summer.
Most of the programs offered at the center will move to West End Center, 5250 Enright at Union avenues. The full schedule is on the web page: http://tinyurl.com/ylo9yzq
Funds for the improvements to Wohl are from a 1/8-cent sales tax passed by voters in November 2006. It provided funds to build two new recreation centers and for improvements to five of the city’s existing centers. The center in Carondelet Park is scheduled to open in mid-November and work is underway on the center in O’Fallon Park.
Improvements to Wohl include new sidewalks and stairs, painting of the gym, locker rooms and multi-purpose room and new bleachers will be installed. Both men’s and women’s locker rooms will be renovated and the floor will be replaced in the multi-purpose room.
The pool room will get new ceilings, doors, paint, ventilation and lighting system. An ADA pool lift will be installed.
“This is an exciting renovation and will make Wohl a new, modern facility,” said Evelyn Rice-Peebles, recreation commissioner.
