Guide to the Ratings

3-Year Average Inspection Score - This is the establishment’s average score based on the scores from all inspections of the establishment included in the database summarized in this report.

Compared to Average (Inspection Score) of ALL Establishments in Category - This column shows whether the establishment’s average inspection score is Above or Below the average inspection score of all other food service establishments in the same category (e.g. Restaurants, Carry-outs, Taverns, or Hospitals) included in this report.

Establishment Type - Under City Statutes the City of St. Louis Department of Health periodically inspects and issues permits to all food service establishments operating in the City. This report only includes permanent establishments that serve the general public including company cafeterias. Each establishment is categorized by the type of food service operation it is, such as carry-out, restaurant, tavern, hospital, etc. However, it should be noted that establishments vary in size and complexity even within these categories.

Last Inspected & Current Grade - Inspectors from the Department of Health regularly conduct unannounced inspections of food service establishments. The date listed is the date of an establishment’s last regular or any follow-up inspection that had occurred as of the date of this report. The current grade is the establishment’s grade as of the date of this report.

Neighborhoods - The City neighborhood in which the establishment is located. More information about each neighborhood, including neighborhood maps, is available at: http://stlouis.missouri.org/neighborhoods/

Number of Downgrades - Establishments are inspected against a set of standards. Each standard has a numerical score which the establishment receives if it meets the standard. The item scores are then totaled to determine an overall inspection score. The highest total score an establishment can receive is 100. In general, an establishment must receive a score of 70, or above, to pass an inspection. An establishment’s inspection score is converted to a letter-grade rating by the following formula:

  • Score 85 to 100 = A Rating
  • Score 70 to 84 = B Rating
  • Score 70 or less = C Rating

If an establishment’s grade rating changes (A to B or B to C) to a lower one as a result of an inspection this change is counted as a downgrade. An establishment may be downgraded due to a low inspection score or if crucial or repeated violations are found during an inspection, or regardless of the establishment’s total inspection score.

Number of Inspections Last 3-Years - Establishments undergo regular inspections approximately three times a year. During a regular inspection, inspectors evaluate food safety and sanitation practices. Follow-up inspections may also take place as warranted, for example, to verify corrections made to problems identified during a regular inspection. This report summarizes an establishment’s regular and follow-up inspections for the last three years. If an establishment is new or recently changed ownership, the number of inspections shown for it may be fewer than the number of inspections shown for other, longer-operating establishments.
