School Crossing Guard

Nature of Work
This is work supervising and assisting school children in the crossing of City streets during the morning, noon and evening periods of a school day. Work rarely exceeds four hours per day. Candidates may be selectively referred to work at intersections within their own neighborhoods.

Minimum Qualifications
Ability to understand instructions (written and oral); ability to follow instructions (written and oral) ability to read and understand school crossing manuals and related materials; ability to observe traffic and children crossing City streets during the morning, noon, and evening periods; ability to stand for a maximum of four hours in varying weather conditions, including extreme cold, heat, windy conditions, or precipitation; ability to carry and raise a crossing sign; and the ability to assist children in crossing City streets in a safe manner.

Applicants must currently be residents of the City of St. Louis.

CHARACTER INVESTIGATION: Each applicant is required to present a “Police Record Check” obtained from the most appropriate law enforcement agency. In most cases, this would be from the local Police Department where you have resided for the longest time period over the last five years. The original copy of the “Police Record Check” must be submitted at the time of appointment and must be a current check (less than six months old). St. Louis residents can obtain a combined St. Louis City/ St. Louis County Police Record Check for $9.00 from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, 1200 Clark Avenue between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M., Monday through Friday.

MEDICAL: Candidates will be required to pass a Drug Screen Test, a Vision Examination and a Hearing Test as part of the medical examination process.

HOW TO APPLY

Applicants must submit completed official Department of Personnel Employment Application Form (PD60) and the two School Crossing Guard Addendums to the Department of Personnel, Room 700, Carnahan Courthouse. Applicants will be called for the Oral Interview on the basis of the indicated training and experience on their application and specific needs for filling vacancies in the City Service.

You must complete the Employment History and Educational/Training History sections of the application even if you attach a resume. Resumes will not substitute for a fully completed application. When completing the Employment History and the Educational/Training History sections, describe your complete work history including your education and training. Attach additional sheets, if necessary. Complete all requested information. Explain gaps in employment history. If you have never been employed, please indicate so in the Employment History section of the application. Please check to insure that all questions have been answered in a thorough manner. Applicants with unsuitable or poor work histories will not be considered. Incomplete or carelessly completed applications will not be considered.
