The Chemical Building was designed in 1896 by architect Henry Ives Cobb and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The building has over 1000 windows.

The 17-story Chemical Building, a largely vacant historic office building, will be converted into 70 to 76 for-sale condominiums. Civitas Development of Los Angeles, a joint venture between Heisman Properties and Crossland Capital Partners, also of Los Angeles, bought the building Jan. 3, 2006 for $6.6 million. The redevelopment is called "The Alexa."

Parking will be added in the space behind the L-shaped building, and the ground floor will have retail space available for lease. Floors two through four will be used as office space.

the Chemical Building will have 70-76 for-sale condominiums.

Civitas will seek between $5 and $6 million in state and federal historic tax credits for the Chemical Building redevelopment.
