Built in 1919 of reinforced concrete, the eight story building was used by Ely-Walker Dry Goods for storage. In 1959 General American Life Insurance Co. purchased the building for use as an office annex to its headquarters at 1501 Locust (see Terra Cotta Lofts).
The exterior originally had glazed white terra cotta; it was resurfaced in 1960 with a modernistic design by Wedemeyer & Hecker.
