The Living Landmark Campaign is restoring this treasured Victorian home, constructed in 1851, to its 1880s appearance as a museum.
Scores of private individuals, as well as corporations and private charitable trusts, have donated to this important project.
Phase I completed the mechanical restoration of the building. Phase II has addressed interior restoration. The Campbell House Foundation reports that th project cost is minimal.
Robert and Virginia Campbell moved into this house in 1854, a commercial district sprung in the neighborhood and all the residents fled, except the Campbells. They moved away 1938 when their schizophrenic son, Hazlett died. Efforts to turn the house into a museum began at that time. Local St. Louisians raised more than $6, 500 dollars to buy the homes' furnishings, and the former Stix, Baer and Fueller purchased the house. The Campbell house museuam debuted in February, 1943.
