The Thomas F. Eagleton Federal Courthouse was completed in September of 2000. At 567 feet high, it is the city's fourth tallest structure. There are 28 stories above ground and four levels of parking below ground. The building is reported to be one of the largest courthouses in the world with state-of-the-art infrastructure designed to meet the programmatic needs of the year 2025. The project was awarded a citation by the American Institute of Architects and highlighted in its 1994-1995 Justice Facilities Review.
The building opened with 25 occupied courtrooms. By 2021, 49 courtrooms are expected to be in use. The courthouse's staggered floor design allows for two-story courtrooms with exterior walls to make use of natural light in public spaces.
