On February 5, 2002, Barnes-Jewish Hospital opened the Charles F. Knight Emergency and Trauma Center. The new emergency center was the final phase of a $320 million multi-year renovation and expansion project started in 1996.

The busiest of all St. Louis-area emergency rooms, the emergency center has 61 patient beds and a modular layout that clusters patients in pods, each with separate family waiting areas. The new building also houses a 700-car visitor garage for St. Louis Children's Hospital and research space for Washinton University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
