A research facility is being built by Washington University on the west side of Euclid near Children's Place, replacing a parking structure. This research building will consist of 250,000 square feet and will be built in stages in the heart of the Medical Campus. The building is intended to follow the aim of BioMed 21, a comprehensive plan to make St. Louis a biotech powerhouse. It will be the largest building ever constructed on the campus of Washington University School of Medicine.

In addition to the new building, the university plans to hire 50 faculty members over the course of the BioMed 21 initiative. The new hires include five endowed professorships and eight career-development awards for young faculty members.

The BJC Institute of Health is striving for LEED certification.
