Founded by Don Danforth III and Duncan Marshall after their volunteer experience at Mathews-Dickey Boys' and Girls' Club, City Academy operated out of the Mathews-Dickey building beginning in 1999. The academy started with 42 students and four teachers and added a new grade level every year. In September, 2003, Clayco Construction Company and Legacy Building Group, LLC broke ground for a new location for City Academy. The new two-story, 40,000-square-foot facility sits on approximately three acres adjacdent to the Mathews-Dickey Boys' and Girls' Club at Penrose and Kingshighway Blvd.

The new building meets the needs of 120 students in junior kindergarten through sixth grade. It includes eight classrooms, a library, art and music centers, a science center, an assembly and performance center, a playground, and a media center. The school is run by a principal, eight teachers, and seven other staff members. The mission of City Academy is the provision of challenging preparatory education to children living in and near the City of St. Louis. As a college preparatory elementary school, the vision of City Academy is to graduate children ready to attend area middle schools. City Academy is tuition based. The average cost to educate each student is nearly $12,000; however, financial assitance is offered to families who qualify after receiving acceptance to the school. All families must pay a minimum tuition that averages $1,750. Admission is not based on family income.
