The new Contemporary Art Museum sits at the corner of Washington Boulevard and Spring Avenue, next to the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts. The new 27,000-square-foot building has a street presence, increased exhibition space, performance space, a cafe and other amenities. The building has an open matrix of interior and exterior spaces that strengthens the physical and experiential connections between the city and the protected domain of art. It shares a courtyard with the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts. The Contemporary is seen both as an independent entity and a complement to its neighbor.
The Museum raised funds through a $12 million capital campaign. Total expenses for the new building are $7.5 million, with the remaining $4.5 million planned to be set aside as a permanent endowment fund. The project was completed in September 2003.
