Gun Violence Unit
"Gateway to Safety Initiative"

  • Three attorneys with caseloads from 30 to 50 cases
  • Attorneys attend Cease-fire meetings and Weed and Seed Meetings
Mission: To aggressively prosecute gun crime offenders while soliciting community input and working in partnership with the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Missouri, other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and U.S. Department of Justice initiatives.

Goals:
  • Disrupt gun violence by aggressively prosecuting gun offenders.
  • Ensure long term sentences of incarceration for the "worst of the worst offenders."
  • Develop positive relationship with law enforcement community, including the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department and the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Missouri and other federal law enforcement agencies.
  • Consult both state and federal gun laws and sentencing opportunities when analyzing Case prosecution.
  • Foster a productive relationship with the community through various initiatives, including the Weed and Seed Program, the Ceasefire program and the Circuit Attorney Community Education Program.
  • Maintain and update a "worst of the worst" offender list, reflecting input from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, the U.S. Attorney's Office and affected neighborhood representatives.
  • Improve the recording and reporting process regarding case outcomes and dispositions.
  • Improve judicial appreciation of gun crimes by educating judges about most flagrant offenders.
  • Improve attorney feedback on cases of significance and the worst offenders.
  • Develop trial skills while litigating gun violence cases.

"Gateway to Safety" Proposed Elements

Coordination with Law Enforcement Community:
  • (Local) work with local police officials to identify the more highly concentrated high crime neighborhoods and seek their input on the "people of interest", or the worst of the worst offenders;
  • (Federal) consult the U.S. Attorney's Office about state offenders eligible for federal prosecution and federal sentencing guidelines;.
  • Participate in U.S. Department of Justice initiatives, such as project weed and seed and project ceasefire; and
  • Develop understanding of federal sentencing laws to effectively communicate with U.S. Attorney's Office about coordinated prosecutorial approach.
