Defendants have a right to file an appeal in the appropriate appellate court. Most defendants convicted of a felony by a jury appeal their convictions. Felonies and misdemeanors are initially appealed to the Court of Appeals (the Eastern District Court of Appeals handles appeals from St. Louis City.) Only death sentences may be appealed directly to the Missouri Supreme Court. When the Defendant appeals, the Missouri Attorney General’s Office represents the State of Missouri on felony cases.
