Other Environmental Information

While CERP concentrates on four key topics -- Lead, Brownfields, Vacant Buildings and Refuse/Trash -- many other environmental issues are important in St Louis and East St Louis They include:

Asbestos. This fibrous material, used extensively in fireproof insulation, flooring, ceiling tiles, gloves and automobile parts, until the 1970s, is known now to be cancer-causing.

Air Quality. The St Louis metropolitan area is in non-compliance with Federal Environmental Protection Agency air quality standards. Numerous initiatives are underway to improve our air quality. These include:

  • St Louis Community Air Project -- an initiative to study and monitor air quality programs in the 63104 and 63118 zip codes in South St Louis City;
  • Gateway Clean Air Program -- a program in Missouri which requires testing and repair of automobiles in the St Louis area to assure they do not excessively pollute the air; and
  • St Louis Regional Clean Air Partnership -- an initiative to inform the public about the daily air quality in St Louis, and provide information on ways individuals can help clear the air.

    Drinking Water. In the City of St Louis, the Water Division offers an annual report on the quality of the water it distributes. Access the latest report at http://www.stlwater.com/quality.html.

    Green Space. One of the key elements in quality of life in the dense urban environment is having a place to play in a park or recreational area. The City of St Louis Department of Parks, Recreation & Forestry maintains over 100 parks serving St Louisans and visitors from throughout the world.
