Living Wage
(Initiative Petition)

Shall an ordinance be enacted as proposed by the "Living Wage" initiative petition requiring employers receiving significant economic benefits from the City to pay their employees a "living wage." The ordinance will apply to companies that receive City economic development assistance (for example, tax abatements, grants, or loans) valued at $100, 000 or more, or companies that receive City service contracts valued at $50, 000 or more.
A "Living Wage" is defined as an hourly wage that, for a worker employed on a full-time basis, will produce an annual income equivalent to at least 130% of the federal poverty guidelines for a family of three as calculated by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services. Currently, that figure is $8.84 per hour. Employers that do not provide health benefits to their employees will be required to pay them an additional $1.39 per hour. Both figures will be adjusted annually for inflation.
