President of the Board of Aldermen Lewis E. Reed From time to time the Board of Aldermen makes headlines in the local news due to various, controversial bills being debated but most citizens have little contact with the city's legislative process. Nothing can become an ordinance in St. Louis without first making it past the Board, which consists of 28 aldermen (one for each of the city's 28 wards) and an Aldermanic President. The president presides over the weekly meetings, assigns bills to each of the 15 committees and decides which aldermen will sit on those committees. Aside from leading the Board of Aldermen, the president also sits on a variety of boards and commissions within city government. The most notable of these is the three-member Board of Estimate and Apportionment. The mayor and the comptroller serve as the other two members and it's this body that approves St. Louis' annual budget and makes decisions on all major financial expenditures in the city. The Board meets every Friday at 10am in Room 230 of City Hall, 1200 Market Street. Every citizen is welcome to attend our meetings. Please don't hesitate to write or call my office at (314) 622-4114.
