Under certain circumstances, the City of St. Louis Animal Regulatory Center will spay or neuter dogs and cats.
A veterinarian is available to spay and neuter adopted dogs and cats Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 3:30p.m. to 4:00p.m.. Also, on Saturday from 9:00a.m. to 9:30a.m. Cost: Cost is dependent on weight and sex of the animal. Generally the heavier the animal, the more expensive it is for the surgery. Moreover, spaying females are usually more expensive than neutering males. Fees:
Spay Female Cats $25.00 Neuter Male Cats $15.00
Spay Female Dogs less than 35lbs $35.00 Spay Female Dogs more than 35lbs $45.00 Fees vary for female dogs pver 80 lbs.
Neuter Male Dogs less than 35lbs $25.00 Neuter Male Dogs more than 35lbs $30.00 Fees vary for female dogs more than 80lbs
Payment Method: The acceptable method of payment for spay/neuter is money order. All other forms of payment are not accepted.
If the animal is 10 years of age or older or has medical problems (too weak to sustain surgery) they do not need to get spayed or neutered and fee is waived.
If the animal has bitten someone and is impounded at the Animal Regulation Center, the animal must be spayed or neutered if it has not been already. The city ordinance charges a $50.00 fee for animals that have bitten and have not been spayed or neutered. If the animal is 10 years or older or has a medical problem, the owner does not have to pay the $50.00.
Free or Low Cost Spay or Neuter programs: If you are on Medicaid/or Medicare and your income level is below a certain level, you may be eligible for spay or neuter of your dog/cat at no cost or reduced rate. To find out, applications are available.
The links on this page provide helpful information about other low/cost spay/neuter programs, such as Operation SNIP, sponsored by the Humane Society of Missouri, which offers spay or neuter for all sizes of dogs and cats, for the low price of $29.95 per animal, with no income restrictions! Appointments are required, and must be made by calling 314-802-5700 -- not the general HSMO veterinary line. Operation SNIP surgeries are performed only on Thursdays, and animals must be dropped off by 8 AM; they can be picked up after 4 PM that same day.
