Asbestos is a mineral found in certain rocks whose strong thin fibers are not visible to the human eye.
It may be found in homes built prior to the 1970s, in insulation wrapped around piping, ceiling and floor tiles, exterior siding, as well as what is known as vermiculite insulation. A large asbestos processing facility was once located near Riverview Drive in far north St. Louis, so some contamination may occur in that area.
Once identified, asbestos must be removed by trained and certified asbestos abatement crews. Simply getting the material wet is not sufficient in most cases. Instead, the area where the asbestos is located must be sealed and contained, and workers must wear extensive protective gear to prevent breathing in the fibers.
Whether a building is being rehabbed or demolished, asbestos must be handled carefully and as safely as possible.
The City of St. Louis Air Pollution Control Division thus must approve any large-scale building demolition permits because of the potential for release of asbestos and other airborne pollutants.
