Alley Maintenance and Repair

Maintenance of alleys is a joint responsibility of property owners and the City of St. Louis.

You are responsible for keeping the portion of the alley behind your property neat and clean. You could be cited if trash/debris accumulates in the alley behind your property. If someone illegally dumps items behind your property, try to find out any information or a description of who dumped it, where that person lives, and/or the vehicle used during the dumping. Report all details to the Citizens Service Bureau.

If they have a solid lead and a witness, the Trash Investigators (off-duty Police Officers) will attempt to make an arrest in the case. Without such information, the Forestry Division will make an inspection and the property owner may be cited.

Alley paving and/or rebuilding is sometimes funded by individual aldermen through capital improvement allocations, or through Community Development Block Grant funds in areas undergoing major redevelopment. Funding is very limited.
