Aldermen
There are 28 aldermen (city council members), each serving a ward of about 12,000 residents in the City of St. Louis. The President of the Board of Aldermen is the 29th (tie-breaking) vote, and is elected citywide.
Aldermen are elected in the April municipal elections to four-year terms. The terms are staggered, so that every two-years, half the board is elected. The municipal primary is held in March, one month before the municipal general election.
Many aldermen may be reached directly at home, either by telephone or email. All may be reached through the Board of Aldermen offices at City Hall.
In addition to writing and passing legislation, aldermen can also assist constituents in getting city service requests completed in a timely fashion. While all requests should go through the Citizens' Service Bureau first, making the alderman aware of a major problem is a smart thing to do.
