Drivers Licenses
Effective July 1, 2005, Missouri law requires all applicants to show official documents providing proof of identity, proof that they are lawfully present in the U.S., and proof of Missouri residence before a permit, driver license, or nondriver license can be issued. All applicants must present and surrender their current permit, driver license, or nondriver license, in addition to providing proof of legal presence. In most cases, this means married women must present both a birth certificate and a marriage license with their new legal name, in order to obtain/renew drivers licenses. Anyone age 16 and up may apply for a Missouri driver's license. An instruction permit may be obtained at age 15; and between age 16 and 18, the graduated licensing law applies. This law requires that all first-time drivers between 15 and 18 years old complete a period of driving with a licensed driver (Instruction Permit), followed by a period of restricted driving (Intermediate License), before getting a full license. After age 18, the driver's license is ordinarily valid for three years. After age 21, it is usually valid for seven years. The Missouri Department of Revenue issues drivers licenses, but the Missouri State Highway Patrol performs driver testing. In the City of St. Louis, driver testing is performed at the North Kingshighway and South Kingshighway license offices. Drivers license renewal is also available at City Hall, Room 413.
