Garage sales, yard sales, and estate sales are allowed in the City of St. Louis. In most cases, no permit is required. However, there are restrictions.
Residents are limited to two garage sales per calendar year. Also, it is illegal to hold a yard sale in your front yard. All items must be displayed in your garage, backyard, or basement, but not in front of your house, on the sidewalk, or in the tree lawn.
If you hang signs up, please remove them once your sale is over. It is ok to post signs on your own property to advertise the sale; but signs posted on light poles and telephone poles are considered litter. Signs should never be posted on street trees, because nails, tacks etc can damage the tree.
If you plan on having a neighborhood-wide garage sale event, a festival permit may be needed to allow for blocking of sidewalks. If streets will be blocked, a blocking permit from the Street Department is necessary.
